Vintage 1955 Wood Framed Black & White Photograph, (now sepia toned), depicts a grand opening event from 1955 for a mid-century modern home development project.
The image features a large crowd of prospective home buyers arriving in 1950s automobiles, creating a massive line of traffic to tour the brand-new model home. The sign in the photo reads: "Hotpoint Living Conditioned Golden Anniversary Home - OPEN FOR INSPECTION - FRANK RETZLAFF BUILDER."
The Event: In 1955, the appliance manufacturer Hotpoint partnered with Living for Young Homemakers magazine to sponsor an architectural competition. Leading mid-century modern architects designed these highly optimized, "all-electric" concept homes across the country. Local developers, such as Frank Retzlaff in Texas, built these specific model homes to showcase modern building techniques and cutting-edge Hotpoint appliances to the public.
